Are you one of those people who is intimidated by the range of setting and functions on a digital SLR camera and are thinking of opting for a simple point and shoot  one instead?  Keep in mind that while a simple completely automatic camera is fine for indoor photography, you will find that in most cases, outdoor use will produce less than perfect results, landscape photography will be disappointing and special effects almost impossible.  While the high end ones have functions that the hobbyist will never use and their price is prohibitive, a newcomer should find his introduction to digital photography with a medium range digital camera

The first thing to remember about digital photography is that a unlike a film camera a bad picture does not result in any waste it can simple be deleted in the camera itself.  This means that experimenting and learning as you go along costs nothing no film costs or developing charges if, out of 100 pictures only 10 are good, only those 10 need be kept and printed.  Digital photography is fun and with a little experimentation and some reading of useful articles, your skills will begin to improve and you can start using all the features your digital camera has.  This means that you have a range of options that you would never have had if you had bought the simple point and shoot camera.

And for the times you do not want to experiment, simply select the camera’s auto  function and it will do everything of you except press the shutter button this means you have the best of both worlds; you can be a safe or as experimental as you want.  Also, a higher end digital camera will have a better lens and sensors so even in the auto  mode you will get better results than you would if you were using a basic point and shoot camera.

Understanding what you can do with picture editing software is an essential part of any introduction to digital photography.  A digital photo must be transferred to a computer and every camera will have the software to enable this; but after the picture is downloaded to the computer you can start editing and manipulating it to improve on your efforts.  You can modify, edit and enhance a photo as you want and add a lot of special effects to change an ordinary photo into a great one.  In the end you will have no bad photos just photos on which you need to use the editing software more creatively.

It is this ability to create and go beyond just capturing an image that makes digital photography so special.
