For  at least the last half century in America, women have tried to increase the  size of their breasts so as to more attractive to the opposite sex.Breast enlargement creams, herbal supplements, exercise, breast implants, and vacuum pumps are the breast enlargement procedures most commonly used.Out of all these, contrary to what many ads will tell you, the only two that work are implants, and perhaps surprisingly, breast pumps. There is no legitimate scientific evidence that any kind of herbal supplement will do anything to change breast size. Studies claiming otherwise are either meaningless unscientific polls, or, their results have not been replicated by independent researchers. The same goes for creams and exercise, although exercise can indeed create an illusion of greater breast size by enlarging the pectoral muscle under the breasts.

Of the methods that do work, implants are the most popular, especially in the United States. They have been tried as far back as 1895.Some of the substances that were tried early on include ivory, rubber, ox cartilage, and glass balls, with the modern saline and silicone implants making their debut in the early 1960’s.Saline implants are more likely to be noticeable to the eye or touch than silicone ones, and have more problems such as rippling or wrinkling, so silicone implants have been the preferred choice.Silicone implants at first were less lifelike and harder than the ones that came out in the 1970s, but these later ones had problems such as a tendency to rupture, which led to some major lawsuits against the manufacturers. The latest silicone implants, however, are nearly free of these problems, and are increasingly popular. The implant breast enlargement procedures can increase breast size quite substantially, but they can cost five to ten thousand dollars, there is always some risk of infections, the recovery time is long, and ruptures can still sometimes occur.

The other procedure that works involves wearing specially designed suction cups within a sports bra.Suction is applied gently and continuously to the breasts, which creates sustained tension and thereby stimulates tissue growth.Breasts grow about one cup size on average when the method has been used for ten weeks. The upsides of this method compared to surgery are that the cost is a more affordable $2500, there are no problems with ruptures or infections, and the breasts feel and look more natural, but the downsides are the necessity of wearing the pumps ten hours a day for ten weeks, and the less dramatic size increase.
