When husband and wife decide to end their relationship, they opt for divorce. Divorce is a legal term that means separation, and in recent times, the divorce rate has increased manifold. Divorce is not easy for anyone, and often husband and wife spend a lot of time trying to resolve the conflicts before taking any drastic step. As per experienced therapists and counselors, the two biggest causes of people are lack of foundation in the marriage and any kind of abuse including emotional, verbal, economic, physical, sexual or religious.

In 18th and 19th centuries, people did not marry for faith based foundations, love or mutual interests, and the marriages were mainly done to produce heirs, join good families and have kids to work on farms. As more women started entering the professional world, their mental horizons expanded, and they decided that they could live independently, without any support from father and husband as breadwinner. These days, more and more women are living alone, and are not dependent on anyone. Marriages have become more of a choice, and are no longer considered the matter of survival in the society.

Lack of commitment towards marriage is usually the cause of divorce, and for people who want quick solutions in life cannot sustain the marriage for long. Though mother-in-law is just like a mother to the newly wed girl, some females do not agree with it, and they consider their daughter-in-law as a threat to their holding and position in the family. People who are unhappy with their partners or have uncontrollable libido cannot be loyal to their partners, and when the spouse of such a person comes to know about it, the divorce is usually the end result. When there is no communication between partners, the relationship cannot work, and when the resentment builds, it leads to divorce.

If the females are working, their financial independence makes them rigid, and they are not willing to compromise even the little bit. This can lead to frustration and dissatisfaction, souring the relationship and leading to end of relationship. Each marriage requires help now and then, during tough times, as well as during good times. If one of the spouses is mentally instable or has a mental illness, there is no room for normal communication, which leads to divorce.

Another common cause for divorce is also the lack of physical intimacy. Mid-life crisis, addiction to drugs and alcohol, physical or emotional abuse, family strains and workaholism are other common causes of divorce. Divorces happen because people do not communicate their expectations prior to marriage, and later, look for quick solutions to the marital problems.
