Bulimia is an eating disorder where people who have developed it binge on food and then purge it. There are a variety of methods on how bulimics purge the food that they eat. But it usually involves through natural means or by using diuretics or laxatives, while others use other methods of purging such as exercising excessively.

Although there are many effects of bulimia, one of the most obvious ones is what it can do to one’s teeth and mouth. Those who purge by vomiting brings up the acid from their stomach up to the esophagus and into the mouth, the acid wear down the natural tooth enamel. Other bulimia effects include gum infections, cavities, and sores. The esophagus may also become irritated by the stomach acids travelling towards the mouth and can produce heartburn.

Those that purge with through laxative methods oftentimes tend to get constipated. They have irregular bowel movements and it can be quite difficult for them. Another bulimia effects one’s nutrition as this can lead to malnutrition and an unhealthy body.

Other bulimia effects include chronic kidney problems because of mineral and vitamin deficiencies. Oftentimes bulimia may even lead to kidney failure. They may also become dehydrated. Being dehydrated may lower your body’s electrolytes which can cause irregular heartbeats or heart problems.

Another bulimia effect is these people lack self-esteem, have no self confidence, which can lead to depression. Bulimia also affects the people close to the sufferer. If you or someone you know has bulimia, gather all the information that you need now to start getting help. Different individuals need different treatments, but you won’t know what you will need until you seek professional help. People who develop this disorder are usually intelligent, creative, and very eager to please others, in other words, a perfectionist.

These are the building blocks of preventing bulimia so you not only help yourself, but also help those people around you.
